Document of a Dynamic Community: The Skanner Photography of Julie Keefe

The Oregon Historical Society highlights the photographic work of Julie Keefe in a new exhibit, "Document of a Dynamic Community: The Skanner Photography of Julie Keefe."

The event featured photographs, musical entertainment, a floor to ceiling collage of Keefe's work and brief remarks from Keefe herself. 

Oregon Historical Society Library Director Geoff Wexler said the event was a success and tremendous enthusiasm was shown by all who came to see the work.

Wexler said Keefe's work with The Skanner News is a great document covering the African American community in the area from the early 1990s to the present day.

"Her work is not only highly professional but her personal involvement with the community gives her photographs an amazing insight and power," Wexler said. "My deepest thanks to Julie for all her efforts at making this exhibit happen."

The OHS Research Library will exhibit its collection of photographs from The Skanner News Aug. 24 through Dec. 18. The exhibit will feature the work of photographer Julie Keefe, whose work has appeared in The Skanner’s print edition and on its website for more than 20 years.

This exhibit draws on OHS Research Library's Skanner Photographs Collection, which owners Bernie Foster and Bobbie Dore Foster donated to OHS in 2013. The collection contains 17 cubic feet of photographic prints from The Skanner’s 40-year history, including dramatic images of community events, political campaigns, sports, culture -- and thousands of notable personalities.

The exhibit will provide a document of Portland and its Black community during a critical 45-year period of growth and change. The entire collection is available to the public for research at theOHS Research Library, accessible here.

Keefe was named Creative Laureate of Portland in 2012. Her work has been published in a variety of public and private settings, including collaborations with the Equity Atlas of the Coalition for a Livable Future, Portland State University's School of Social Work, the Portland Art Museum, The Oregon Community Foundation, and Caldera.
