One thousand children from the Portland-metro area will get new tennis shoes, socks and a backpack filled with school supplies at an event sponsored by the Taylor Hospitality Group and the nonprofit Samaritans Feet.
The Soles4Souls 2013 event works with children and teens referred by Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland, Friends of the Children, New Avenues for Youth, Outside In, Dress for Success, Pathfinders of Oregon, SEI Inc., the Maurice Lucas Foundation, and several participating churches.
Volunteers first wash the children's feet before giving them their new socks and tennis shoes.
Soles4Souls 2013 will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 19, in the Embassy Suites Hotel, 319 S.W. Pine St., Portland.
Frank Taylor of the Taylor Hospitality Group runs two Portland restaurants: Portland Prime and Quartet. Need in our local communities has continued to grow during the past year, Taylor said, making the back-to-school event more important than ever.
"Last year's event gave away more than 500 pairs of shoes. This year we're shooting for 1,000," he said. "I'm looking forward to working with our partners to help change children's lives.
"We don't want to talk about it; we want to be about it. It really does take a village."
