Celebrating Female War Veterans

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is the scene for Salute the Runway, a joint production from Little Black Dress Wines & Fatigues to Fabulous, Saturday, July 12 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Female veterans and active duty members are holding a fashion show. To support women in the armed forces, especially as they re-enter civilian life.

Fatigues to Fabulous is a national campaign designed to support women serving in our nation's military, and the unique issues faced by women veterans.

The group is working to help women make the transition from military to civilian life, navigate the healthcare system for their unique needs, raise awareness of the challenges women face upon return, and harness resources to support them.  

The campaign is in partnership with 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization the ‘Society for Women’s Health Research,’ and has collaborated with nonprofit organizations such as ‘Grace After Fire,’ ‘Save-a-Suit Foundation’ and ‘David Lynch Foundation.’

Senior-Friendly Computer Classes

Southeast Seattle Senior Center offers affordable, hands-on computer classes just for seniors, July 15 through Oct. 2, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 to 11 a.m., at their facility, 4655 S. Holly.

 The classes, which cost $3 for members and $5 for non-members,  is taught by Leslie Stewart, who tailors classes for participants and makes computer skills easily accessible and lessons welcoming for older adults.

The most recent report from the Pew Research Center shows that only 59 percent of U.S. seniors are internet users (compared to 86 percent of all adults.) The research also shows that those seniors who are using the internet connect with the digital world regularly.

Who Donated Human Skulls to Bellevue Goodwill?

Three human skulls that were donated to a local thrift store are prompting the King County Medical Examiner’s Office to turn to the public for assistance.

There is no information regarding who donated the three skulls to the Bellevue Goodwill, or how they came to be in his/her possession.

Two of the skulls are adult specimens that were clearly used in a medical clinic or instruction.

The third skull is very old and appears to be the fragile remains of a Native American child.

The Native American skull must be repatriated to its tribe of origin, by state law.  However, additional details are needed, to properly identify the correct tribe or tribes. The Medical Examiner is requesting that the private citizen who donated the skulls provide information, without penalty, about the origin of the child’s skull.

The skulls were donated in June to the Bellevue Goodwill, at 14515 NE 20th St, Bellevue.  Employees there realized the skulls were authentic human remains and followed proper procedure by contacting the Medical Examiner’s Office and law enforcement.

Take Sounder Train to Mariners Game Sunday

Baseball fans can save parking hassle and gas money by taking Sound Transit’s Sounder train to the Mariners 1:10 p.m. game against the Oakland Athletics this Sunday.

The train from the south will leave Lakewood at 10:45 a.m. The train from the north will leave Everett at 11:15 a.m. Return trains will leave King Street Station 35 minutes after the game.

Sounder trains will serve three remaining Mariners games through August. A complete schedule of game day train service is available at soundtransit.org/Schedules/Event-services. 

Special Sounder service is in addition to regular Link light rail service to and from Safeco Field. Link runs every 10 minutes on Sunday and serves 13 stations in downtown Seattle, SODO, Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, Tukwila and SeaTac. Link’s Stadium and International District stations are a short walk from Safeco Field.

Many ST Express buses also drop off passengers near the stadium. Link and ST Express bus schedules are available at soundtransit.org/Schedules.

Regular fares apply for all Sound Transit services. ORCA cards cost $5 for adults, plus whatever amount a rider chooses to load in the card’s E-Purse or the cost of a pass that is good for unlimited transit trips.
